Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Gradually add all-purpose flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl.
  3. Let it Rise: Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let sit in a warm area for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Pretzels: Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C). Punch down the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 24-inch rope and twist ends to form pretzel shapes. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Boil the Pretzels: Bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Stir in baking soda. Drop each pretzel into boiling water for about 30 seconds.
  6. Bake the Pretzels: Remove boiled pretzels, sprinkle with coarse sea salt, and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Serve: Allow pretzels to cool slightly before transferring to a serving platter. Serve warm.
